About Almora

Almora is one of the most picturesque hill stations of Uttarakhand, located at a height of 1,651 meters above sea level in the Kumaon Hills. Almora is situated on a 5 km long ridge which is shaped like a horse shoe. Almora is surrounded by thick green forests of Pine and Fir trees, making its natural beauty the prime attraction here. Tourists can also enjoy the local cuisines of this place and occupy themselves with the indigenous handicrafts products and other such artefacts available around the town. The best time to visit this place is during the seasons of summer and autumn.

Best Time to Visit

By Air

Nearest Airport - Pantnagar is 112 kms away from Almora and takes around 4-5 hours to reach. It gets regular flights Delhi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow,Kolkota and Mumbai respectively. Taxis and cabs are available from the airport to any onward destination.

Please note that this airport is less commercial as mostly private chartered jets land here. Depending on traffic many of the flights are either routed through Delhi or postponed few days ahead. Please enquire beforehand and only then proceed to book your ticket.

By Rail

EVENTS/FESTIVALS

Nanda Devi Festival
Nanda Devi Festival is probably the oldest celebrated festival in Almora started by the Chanda Dynasty from 17th Century onwards. It is celebrated to offer prayers to the family goddess, Goddess Nanda, at the Temple of Nanda Devi. The festival is celebrated for five continuous days in the month of September with great zeal and vigour attracting a lot of tourists.

Uttraini Festival
Celebrated annually in the month of January, Uttraini Festival is the biggest Trade festival of Almora bringing all the traders on one platform. This fair is very similar to the Trade Fair held in the national capital of Delhi.

Jageshwar Monsoon Festival
Jageshwar Monsoon Temple is a month long festival celebrated from 15th of July till 15th of August at the Temple of Lord Jagnath. The temple was constructed between the 8th-9th centuries. The one month long festival is celebrated with great zeal with many live folk dances, musical concerts and much more.

SHOPPING AREA

Lal Bazaar, Thana and Johri are the famous shopping destinations in Almora. Tourists can also have a round of these markets and watch the craftsmen make products in their small household industries. Almora is famous for Rabbit wool clothing and products, and tourists can find plenty of options of that in the above mentioned markets. Besides this, tourists can also buy Pashmina shawls, sheep wool blankets and many more products of interest and memory.
