A famous skiing destination located in the Chamoli district hugged by the snow covered Garhwal Himalayan ranges at an altitude of 2800 meters above the sea level. Auli earned its name from the regional language in which meadows mean 'Bugyal' which means 'Auli'. Unlike the neighbouring hill stations, Shimla, Manali, Nanital; Auli is not equally famous. After Uttrakhand was formed in the year 2000, Auli has gained importance as a sports and religious destination. It has organised many skiing competitions; national and international. Auli is one of those destinations who have had histories of nomadic tribe as their aboriginals. A semi-nomadic tribe called 'Bhotiya Tribe' was native to this place that lived on barter trade with Tibet. The trading with Tibet however continued centuries after civilization, only the means and terms changed. Today Auli stands as an important Indo-Tibetan trade border and training ground for Paramilitary forces and Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force. For enjoying skiing and other such activities, the best time to visit Auli is during winters, however, Auli is also famous as a religious destination and to visit for that one must avoid winters.
