Basantapur is one of the most happening places in Kathmandu, Nepal. Basantapur means “place of spring”. There are various temples and sceneries to be seen in Basantapur. Basantapur Durbar Square or Kathmandu Durbar Square is the plaza in front of the old Royal palace of the Kathmandu Kingdom. It is one of three Durbar Squares in Kathmandu, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.The King’s palace Hanuman Dhoka is a huge complex with several buildings, towers, and pagodas and inner courtyards. On the corner of the Durbar Square is the white building in neoclassical style which was constructed in the second half of the 19th century. At the end of Basantapur is the house of the ‘Kumari’. She is seen as a living goddess and the incarnation of Taleju. Although there are some other Kumaris in Kathmandu, but this one is the most important. Every year the king visits her during the Dassain festival to get her blessings. It is to symbolize that he has a legitimization directly from the gods. The House was built in 1757. Passing two white lions, you enter a beautiful inner courtyard with richly carved windows. If you are lucky, the Kumari will come to the window and look at you, but no one is allowed to take a picture.
