trekking in Gangotri

The Ganga River originates from an ice glacier spread over an expanse of 8 km by 24 km which is known as the Gangotri glacier. The Gangotri glacier is the source of the Bhagirathi river which joins together with Alaknanda to form Ganga at Devprayag. From this very spot to its mixing with the Bay of Bengal waters, the River Ganga stretches for a length of 2,480 km. Surrounded in the north and left are the vertical faces of the Bhagirathi massifs. The Gangotri Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is the most preferred trek track here in Gangotri amidst visitors. The south side of the place is surrounded by scree slopes that sweeps up to form a distinctive shivling type pattern which is topped by its signature overhang. The mouth of the Gaumukh is a small entrance at an eye level of the icy-cavern. Each trickling drop from the glacier contributes to the massive river we know as The Ganges or River Ganga which has always been the focus of spiritual purification.
