Places to Visit in Gulmarg Jammu and Kashmir

  • Gondola Lift is one of the major tourist attractions of Gulmarg. C omprising of two stretches between on a distance of 5 kms, Gondola Lift is the only cable car system in Asia that runs at an elevation of 13,500 feet above sea level. Gondola Lift is designed in technical collaboration with French company PUMA and managed by Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation. Located in the backdrop of beautiful Himalayan peak, Gondola Lift is situated in Gondola Village and runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoor and from Kongdoor to Apharwat.
  • Situated 6 kms from Gulmarg, Khilmarg is a highland meadow accessible by foot or on a pony ride. Khilanmarg gives a mesmerising view of Himalayan peaks and especially during the winter season when the peaks are hugged by snow and surrounded with trees covered with snow too.
  • Built in 1902 by the British, Gulmarg Golf Course situated at the height of 2,650 meters above sea level is the highest Golf Course in the world. It is managed by Jammu & Kashmir tourism department and is an 18-hole Golf Course. Tourists can even become members of this place even for one day and enjoy golfing. In 1922, first Golf Championship was organised here.
  • Located 13 kms from Gulmarg, Tangmarg is a famous handicraft region in the Baramulla District.
  • Baba Reshi Shrine is dedicated to a saint, Baba Reshi, who served as a courtier to the King of Kashmir and was built in 1480. This building depicts both Persian and Mughal architectural designs and is built on an elevation of 2,133 m above sea level on mountains between Gulmarg and Tangmarg. Apart from having religious significance, it is also famous for its architectural work and wooden craft work
  • Drung is the stream of water that flows through the city of Gulmarg and is the most popular picnic spot in Gulmarg. It is believed that walking through the hills around Drung, one can see many houses that are believed to belong to Pandavas. Drung is situated at about 14 kms from Gulmarg and 3 kms from Tangmarg, and tourists can either trek from Tangmarg or can take a transport facility from Gulmarg
  • Apharwat peak is located 13 kms from Gulmarg and stands at a height of 13,500 feet above the sea level. It is snow-covered for most of the year and lies extremely close to LOC (Line of Control) of Pakistan. The twin Apharwat peaks are the longest and highest ski-slopes in Asia and are favourite destination for Ski-lovers.
  • Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is home to various rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. One can find various wildlife species like leopards, red foxes, serow, musk deer and many more. Spread over an area of 480 sq. km., the Biosphere Reserve is located at an altitude of 2,400 to 4,300 meter above the sea level. It is also a good place for bird-watch lovers given it is constantly visited by migratory birds.
  • Placed at an elevation of 2,635 meters above sea level, Lien Marg is the most popular tourist destination and winter sport resort in Kashmir. Set amongst Pine trees, it has breath taking beauty.
  • Located beyond Khilanmarg, Alpather is a triangular shaped lake which remains frozen almost until mid-June. The lake lies at the foot of Aphrawat peaks. It is located 13 kms from Gulmarg and can be reached through trekking or on pony or by other transportation means available from Gulmarg.
  • Maharani Temple is located in the midst of Gulmarg and is sometimes refered to as Rani Temple. The temple was built by Mohini Bai Sisodhia, wife of the king of Kashmir during 1900s. It is believed that she was a true devotee of Lord Shiva and used to spend time in temple worshipping them. The temple houses the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
  • St. Mary’s Church is one of the oldest Churches in the entire state, dating 150 years back. Constructed by British, this Church has British architectural designs and Sunday masses are held here too.
  • Koutar Nag is a beautiful lake situated at an altitude of 13,250 feet above the sea level and giving a mesmerising view of Poonch. The lake remains frozen till the middle of June.
