About Ilam

Illam is a a hilly region of the Mechi zone in the Eastern Development Region of Nepal. Geographically it lies in the hilly region, which is known as the Mahabharata range. The word ‘Illam’ consist of two words-‘I’ and ‘Lam’. In Limbu dialect, the word ‘I’ means ‘windy’ and ‘lam’ means to the way. Upon looking at the topography of Illam, we can actually see several windy paths crisscrossing on the way. Thus, it is rightly named ‘Illam’! It is a far eastern district of the country which is inhabited by people of different cultures. Illam is located on the foothills of Mt. Kanchanjunga.The place is famous for natural scenery and landscapes, and tea production. It is actually one of the major tea producing regions in Nepal. You can see lush-green tea gardens and the rolling hills covered with tea leaves. Greenery is all over the hills of Illam all around the year.The chief attractions include Illam Tea Garden situated near Illam Bazaar and Kanyam Tea Garden located between Terai plain and Illam Bazaar. There are many places for trekking too.
