Standing at a height of 1,250 meters and being equidistant from both Darjeeling and Siliguri, Kalimpong offers almost similar beauties like Darjeeling but at lesser height. Tourists often stop here, stay for a while before moving up to its taller sibling, Darjeeling.

EVENTS/FESTIVALS

Dashain, Diwali, Maghe Sankranti, Holi, and Losar – Tibetan New Year's Day are some of the festivals in Kalimpong that are celebrated with great enthusiasm and fanfare. People from different religions reside in Kalimpong. So, varied festivals are celebrated in Kalimpong. In January, Lepcha or Bhutia New Year is celebrated. Fairs are organised along the Teesta River. Maghe Sankranti is also celebrated in the month of January. This festival marks the end of the ill-omened month of Poush, when religious ceremonies are not performed. In the month of February, the colourful festival of Holi is celebrated. People smear colour on each other and celebrate this festival. Tibetan New Year is also celebrated in February, when colourful folk dances are performed at the main market and at the monasteries. Losar is a three-day festival that is held to celebrate the Tibetan New Year. Monasteries are ornately decorated during this festival. Dashain or Durga puja is celebrated during September-October. Dashain is the most auspicious and the most significant festival of the Nepalese, celebrated with pomp and fanfare. This is a 15-day long festival that starts on a lunar fortnight and ends on the day of full moon. During this time, the city is decorated with lights. People wear new clothes and become a part of the festive sprit of the place.
