About Lamayuru

Situated 127 kms from Leh, Lamyuru is a small village on the popular ‘Silk Route’. It is also the starting point of the trekking route from Lamyuru and Alchi. Lamyuru village is commonly known for the famous Kagyupa Monastery, the oldest Monastery in Ladakh. Tourists can reach Lamyuru through governmet and private transports available from the Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport which is approximately 100 kms away. By Air

Nearest Airport – Leh, 56 kilometers away.

By Rail

Nearest railhead is Jammu, 700 kilometers away.

By Road

Lamayuru is located 434 km from Srinagar and 494 km from Manali. The highways are shut due to heavy snowfalls during the winter months. So, you can only travel to Ladakh by road between May to September.

Best Time to Visit

From April to June, the summer months are favourable.

The recommendations are similar to the ones use in Leh.
Unruly weather plays spoilsport and the safe period to visit Lamayuru exists only in summer when temperatures are comfortable. Mostly the Manali-Leh highway is closed and the only other option is to use the Srinagar-Leh highway which also sees occasional landslides.
 
That said, the Frozen River Trek, called the Chadar Trek is conducted in the months of December to January along the river Zanskar.

Yuru Kabgyat Held in the months of July-August, Yuru Kabgyat is a major Buddhist festival and very faous amongst the Buddhist followers. Buddhist followers from China, Tibet and Korea and many other countries visit Lamayuru to attend this festival every year. This festival is essentially dance and drama performed by Monks with great enthusiasm and zeal.
