About Lonavala

The evergreen and splendid hill station of Maharashtra, Lonavla is nicely settled on the western slopes of majestic mountain range of Sahyadris at an elevation of approximately 625 meters. It is a perennial hill station catering to the demands of weekend travelers. Lonavla is a romantic hill station, which mesmerizes the soul and touches heart of domestic and foreign traveler. Originally, Lonavla was under the rule of Yadava dynasty, and later it came under rule of Mughals. After the decline of Mughal rule, Lonavla was under control of Marathas and the Peshwas, before the imperial rule took control of it. Lonavla is a splendid hill station is sanctified with valleys, milky waterfalls, verdant climes and enjoyable cool winds. It is one of the prime and most popular of the hill stations in Maharashtra. The best time for visiting Lonavla is between September and March. Monsoon is between June and September. Winters are from November through February, and popular among tourists for carrying out the outdoor activities.The summers are hot, with temperatures soaring to maximum of 40 degrees.


How to Reach

By Air

Nearest airport is Pune, 64 kilometers away. Even Mumbai is not far as 120 kilometers but Pune is more convenient and offers more scenic environs than Mumbai.

By Train

Lonavla is on the Pune – Mumbai railway route. Other than express trains, even local trains run between Pune and Lonavla. State Transport & private buses and taxis run between the two stations.

By Road

Lonavla is accessible either from Pune and Mumbai. State Transport Buses, Private Buses & Taxis are available.

Best Time to Visit

The altitude is just around 650 meters, the entire range is an all year destination. However locals recommend visiting during the monsoons as spectacular views command your attention. Heavy rains, waterfalls, low lying clouds, mystical environs make an ideal getaways for couples.

SHOPPING AREA

Lonavla is among the very few best known places in Maharashtra to buy delicious sweet dish named Chikki. This yummy sweet dish is created from jaggery and groundnuts. It is also worth to buy fresh jams and jellies, besidesChewda. Chocolate flavored fudge is famous too. There are wide varieties of flavors available. Lonavla does not deal in any of high-end products and is therefore not apt ably called as shopper’s paradise. However, the local market seems to be a crowded lane providing an array of products like carved wooden figures, cane products, trinkets, and several types of souvenirs.
