About Matheran

Matheran a popular Hill Station and a municipal council located in the Raigad district in Maharashtra. The hill station is located in Karjat Tahsil in Western Ghats range, and is the smallest hill station at the height of 800 m (2,625 feet). Matheran, literally meaning "forest on the forehead" is an eco-sensitive region, acknowledged by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. Known as automobile-free hill station, it attracts tourists from all corners of country and across the globe. Matheran was explored by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the Collector of the Thane District, and Matheran pays praise him for the development of this area. Several places have been named after him. Lord Elphinstone, later gave good connectivity to area. The road to Matheran from Neral is result of efforts made by Lord Elphinstone.


How to Reach

Neral Junction, is a railway station on the Mumbai Karjat Suburban section.

 

By Air

Nearest airport is Mumbai, 84 kilometers away. Private taxis ply upto Neral Jn, a suburban station. Then either you can take the toy train or climb on foot.

 

By Rail

Neral Junction is the nearest railhead, 11 kilometers away!

 

By Road

NO ROADS LEAD TO MATHERAN. This is the only hill station with no road access.

Best Time to Visit

Though Matheran is an all year round tourist destination, locals say visiting in monsoons is a treat. The misty mountains, the heaviest downpour weaves some mighty magic.

EVENTS/FESTIVALS

There are several festivals celebrated in Matheran, and these include:

Mahashivratri

Falling each year in the month of February, Mahashivratri is celebrated with fervor and enthusiasm by Hindu devotees at the Shiv Temple located in the vicinity of Municipal office of Matheran.

Matheran Mahotsav

The Mahotsav is a grand, well-organized five day festival constituted by the Matheran Municipal Council (MMC). The festival is organized in May each year, and its primary objective is to enhance and keep people close to the art, culture and social values of Matheran. One the occasion, several cultural activities are performed by local artists.

Ganesh Chaturthi

This is a popular and widely held festival in Matheran and whole of Maharashtra state. It marks celebration of birth of Lord Ganesha. It is a massive 10 days long celebration beginning in August and extending through September. The gaiety and pomp show put up on occasion is impressive.

Diwali

The festival is celebrated with gala and pomp in Matheran and whole of India by people from all walks of life. Diwali shows victory of good forces over the evil forces. It also marks the welcoming of Lord Rama after period of fourteen years.

Gokilasthami, Holi, Dusshera are the other popular festivities with lots of gusto.
