About Mirik

Mirik has become a popular tourist destination for its natural beauty, climate and easy accessibility. It is just 49 kms from Darjeeling and 52kms from Siliguri and can be reached from either of the places quite easily. Mirik is 1767 m above the sea level and the place is surrounded by forests, flowers and is very peaceful and scenic. The name Mirik comes from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok which means "place burnt by fire". One of the major attractions in Mirik is the Sumendu Lake which is surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other, linked together by an arching footbridge called Indreni or Rainbow Bridge. A 3.5 kms long road encircles the lake and offers aremarkable view of Kangchenjunga. Tourists can enjoy boating on shikaras as well as pony rides while in Mirik. Surrounded by terraced tea estates and spice plantations, the place offers unspoilt beauty to travelers. Tourists as well as the locals can be spotted near the Sumendu Lake enjoying a picnic amidst the astounding and peaceful surroundings. Mirik has not been overrun by tourists yet which is also its USP.
