About Pithoragarh

The nature has been very generous in the distribution of splendor and beauty to Pithoragarh. According to the local folklore,Pithoragarh was the chosen abode of the gods. You will be mesmerized byflamboyant rivers, flowing waterfalls, splendid glaciers, natural reservoirs, serene lakesand an extensive variety of vegetation. This eastern most district of Uttarakhand is also known as 'Miniature Kashmir'. It shares its boundary with Nepal on the east and China (Tibet) on the north. The northern parts are studded with majestic peaks like Trishul, Nandadevi, Nandakote, Panchachuli and Nepal Himalayas including Mount Api. The alpine meadows and glaciers below these magnificent mountains make the district a virtual heaven for nature lovers. Pithoragarh is packed with temples and forts belonging to the era of Chand rulers. The town lies in the centre of four hills - Kumdar, Thal Kedar, Dhwaj and Chandak. The picturesque town of Pithoragarh is a delight for adventure seekers, mountaineers, trekking enthusiasts, botanists, nature lovers as well as pilgrims, as it is an important halt on the famous Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route.

By Air

Naini Saini is the nearest airport, 5 kilometers away.

By Rail

Tanakpur, 151 and Kathgodam, 212 km are the nearest railheads. Buses & taxis are freely available for onward journey.

By Road

Pithoragarh is well connected to some close major towns like Champawat, Lohaghat, Munsiyari and Tanakpur. Taxis and private buses are available for onward journeys.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for visiting Pithoragarh would be from April to November in general. From April to September, the climate is comfortable and ideal for visiting temples. September to November the scenery changes drastically and most eye-catching views appear.

From December to March, it is freezing cold and heavy snowfall can be seen. Those who relish this and arrive in heavy woolens can surely enjoy.
