Jungle Safari in Kashmir serves the best purpose to explore the environs and get a step closer to nature. Using this mode one can explore the wilds and move to the remotest yet beautiful places yet unexplored in the valley. At an altitude ranging between 5,500 ft to 14,000 ft, it presents an opportunity to have an inside view of the vast topography and peep inside the dense forest regions. Due to the variations in altitude, this park is separated into upper and lower regions. This Safari using a Jeep helps uncover the mysteries of the Himalayan Region with distinct wildlife hidden in lush green forests. This park’s terrain ranges from gently sloping grasslands to cliffs and sharp rocky outcrops, which give a stunning view.
Trekking is also an option but confined to physically fit people. On the contrary, the Jeep Safari enables one and all to enjoy their share of an adventure cum expedition to Dachigam National Park, which is located just 22 km from Srinagar. This park is very popular and has some critically endangered species of Hangul or Kashmir Stag.
Huge Variety in Flora & Fauna
Over 500 species of herbs, 50 species of varied trees and 20 types of shrubs make it one of the most diversified parks. Dachigam Park also boasts of musk deer, leopard, Himalayan Grey Langur, Leopard Cat, Himalayan Black Bear, Yellow-throated marten among other wild animals. A paradise for bird watchers because of the presence of Himalayan Monal, Golden Oriole, Pygmy Owlet, Koklass Pheasant, Kashmir Flycatcher, Tytler’s Leaf Warbler, Streaked Laughingthrush, Himalayan Rubythroat and many other species keep lurking. The list of surprises does not end here because of vast carpeted meadows and scenic locales dot the park. The Forest Department maintains two rest houses in Lower Dachigam, but Srinagar, which is 22 km away offers more accommodation options.
Carrying a lunch hamper is a good idea as virtually there are no eating options around the Dachigam National Park. Again, Srinagar has hundreds of options.
Best Time to Visit
April to October is the best time to visit Dachigam though the Park is open throughout the year. Out of this period, probably October is the best month when the rutting season is on and Kashmir’s glorious and beautiful autumn tree colours are evident. For wildlife enthusiasts, spotting Black Bear is possible in September-October because they gobble whatever of the remaining walnuts and acorns to prepare for their long hibernation. You can spot them climbing various trees in search of their favourite food.
