Best Time to Visit Zanskar Jammu and Kashmir

Best Time to Visit Zanskar

The best time to visit Zanskar by road is between May to September. Even though the Srinagar – Leh highway opens by the middle of May, the Manali – Leh highway opens in June only.

It is not recommended to rush through as the snow just begins to melt. Later periods experience Monsoons and travelling becomes too much risky. So choose your time period wisely.

For daredevils, once the roads open up, any time is tourist time.

Zanskar is the remotest and least visited locations. It literally is “A land far far away” or “in the middle of nowhere”. Roads mostly are non-existent, cell phone will be nothing but dead paperweight, and chances of getting stranded will be high.

January & February

If planning to walk along the Zanskarriver, then this is the best time. Embark only if you have a proper guide, have camping gear and have travelled in this region a lot.

March, April & May

The roads will be closed, and no transport available, plus no hotels or guest houses open, weather will be extremely cold with very less snow so no point making any attempt to visit Zanskar.

June, July, August & September

These are the months to visit Zanskar Valley. Snow will be mostly gone and the Suru valley would be lush green all around. If you go early in June, the sight of frozen massive DrangDrung glacier is bound to leave you breathless. The best time would be to plan the journey either in July or August. Weather at this time is very pleasant and you will be able to enjoy your journey to fullest. In September too, the road remains open but weather would start getting cold which may not suit some people.

October, November & December

Road to Padum closes in October, so it is best not to proceed now. If the road gets snowed out, you will be stuck until help arrives and you are able to make it out. November & December are of course the months when the valley is cut off from rest of the country so there is no way to get in or out.

The best time to visit Zanskar by road is between July to early September. Even though the Srinagar – Leh highway opens by the middle of May, the Manali – Leh highway opens in June only.
