Since Nathula Pass in Gangtok gave major access to British for trade with Tibet, Gangtok was inhabited with many British officers and to date remains to have many British architectural constructions. After several political unrests and monarchic rules in Sikkim, in 1975 Sikkim was unchained from all it and announced as the 22nd State of independent India with Gangtok as its capital. Gangtok gained its tourist fame due to the spectacular view that it offers of Kanchenjunga mountain peak. Gangtok was once an important transit between Tibet and India, now it is one of the busiest administrative and business centers of culture and communities. Gangtok also has the country’s first litter and spit free zone, M.G. Marg, where no vehicular traffic is allowed on road.
