- 01------ Getting There
-
Flights & Transport
- Delhi and Kolkata are the cheapest gateways to Paro — Bhutan's only international airport — thanks to shorter flight distances and more frequent Drukair and Bhutan Airlines departures. Flying out of Mumbai, Bangalore or Chennai typically costs ₹6,000–10,000 more per leg once you add the connecting flight. Overland via Phuentsholing shaves cost but adds two travel days.

- 02------ The Fee That Surprises
-
Visa & Sustainable Development Fee
- Indian nationals skip the visa but still pay the SDF — ₹1,200/day for adults, ₹600 for children 6–12. This is the line item that catches nearly every first-time traveller off guard, since "no visa needed" is often mistaken for "no fee at all."

Arrive in Paro → Drive to Thimphu
Arrive at Paro International Airport and enjoy one of the world’s most scenic Himalayan landings. Meet your driver and travel for about 1.5 hours to Thimphu, Bhutan’s charming capital city. Check in to your hotel and spend the evening walking along Norzin Lam, visiting local cafés, handicraft shops, and the peaceful riverside area.
Thimphu Sightseeing & Local Experiences
After breakfast, visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley. Continue to the Memorial Chorten, Folk Heritage Museum, and the Traditional Arts School. In the afternoon, experience Bhutan’s national sport with an archery session and enjoy authentic Bhutanese cuisine at a local restaurant.
Thimphu → Punakha via Dochu La Pass
Drive towards Punakha, crossing the spectacular Dochu La Pass at 3,100 metres. Admire the 108 memorial stupas and, on clear days, panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas. Descend into the warmer Punakha Valley and explore the stunning Punakha Dzong, followed by a walk across the famous Punakha Suspension Bridge over the Pho Chhu River.
Punakha → Paro
Enjoy a relaxed morning in Punakha before driving back to Paro. After checking in, visit the historic Rinpung Dzong and stroll through Paro town. Spend the evening shopping for Bhutanese souvenirs such as textiles, handmade paper products, prayer flags, and traditional crafts.
Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike & Departure
Start early for the iconic hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), dramatically perched on a cliff 900 metres above the valley floor. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery and spiritual atmosphere before descending to Paro. Return to your hotel to freshen up and transfer to the airport for your onward flight home, carrying unforgettable memories of Bhutan.

Money-Saving Tips
Travel in shoulder season
June–August or December cuts hotel rates by 30–40% with fewer crowds at Tiger's Nest.
Group of 3+ splits SDF costs
Cabs, guides and rooms all divide better. A quad brings per-head cost under ₹40k for 5 nights.
Eat where locals eat
Street ema datshi and momos cost ₹150–250 vs ₹800+ at hotel restaurants — same recipe, better vibe.
Book the permit yourself
The online SDF portal is free. Agents charge ₹1,500–3,000 for a form that takes 15 minutes.
- 08 ------ Timing It Right
-
Best Time to Visit
- Bhutan is beautiful all year, but each season has its own mood. Here is a quick comparison to help you plan.
| Season | Weather | Highlights | Recommended For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 10–22°C, blooming | Rhododendrons, Paro Tshechu | First-timers, honeymooners |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 15–25°C, monsoon | Lush green valleys, fewer tourists | Budget travellers |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 8–20°C, clear skies | Thimphu Festival, Himalayan views | Photographers, trekkers |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | -5 to 12°C, sunny cold | Black-necked cranes, low crowd | Solitude seekers |
- Bottom line — June–August and non-holiday December give you the same monasteries, the same Tiger's Nest, at 30–45% less than the September–November festival rush.

Visa & Permit Requirements
-
Foreign nationals (most passports)
- Apply for an e-visa online through the official Bhutan Department of Immigration portal. You'll need to upload a passport scan and a recent passport-size photo, provide your travel itinerary, and pay the visa fee (approximately ₹3,500–₹3,700) along with your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) in advance. Visa applications are typically processed within 5 working days. Since 2022, independent travel has been permitted, so booking through a licensed tour operator is no longer mandatory.
-
Indian, Bangladeshi & Maldivian nationals
- No visa. Just an entry permit issued on arrival (free for Bhutan, but the SDF still applies, at a lower rate). Bring passport or Voter ID, two photos, and a copy of your hotel booking.
-
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)
- This is Bhutan's famous "high-value, low-impact" tourism policy in action. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is currently ₹8,700 per adult per night (approximately US$100) for most foreign nationals, while Indian citizens pay ₹1,200 per person per night. The revenue helps fund Bhutan's free healthcare, education, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation—meaning your contribution directly supports the country's sustainable development while you enjoy its pristine landscapes and unique heritage.
- Once you're inside Bhutan, if you want to travel beyond Thimphu and Paro (Punakha, Bumthang, Phobjikha, etc.) you'll need a route permit, issued free at the Immigration Office in Thimphu. Your hotel or driver usually handles this in an hour.
