Lachen

Lachen is a tranquil Himalayan village in North Sikkim, situated at an altitude of 8,838 ft and 109 km from Gangtok. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and the pristine Lachen Chu River, it serves as the base for exploring Gurudongmar Lake, Chopta Valley, and other northern treks. The name “Lachen” means “big pass” in Tibetan, reflecting its position as a gateway to the higher Himalayas. Due to its proximity to the Indo-China border, a special travel permit is mandatory and can be obtained through authorized agents in Gangtok.

During this mela, the pilgrims offer ceremonies and light lamps at the Khecheolpuri Lake. This falls between the month of February and March.
