Lachung

Lachung is a picturesque hill town nestled in North Sikkim, perched at around 3,000 ft above sea level. Located 120 km from Gangtok, it offers a serene escape with its wooden cottages, blooming kitchen gardens, winding village roads, and grazing cattle. This sleepy hamlet, straight out of a vintage novel, blends rustic charm with essential connectivity—you’ll still find mobile network coverage in most parts.

Best Time to Visit

Travel & Permits

Since Lachung is near the Indo-China border, a Restricted Area Permit is mandatory.

  • Apply via a registered travel agent in Gangtok at least 1 day in advance.
  • Required documents: ID proof, passport-size photographs, and valid travel papers.
  • Military checkpoints are frequent; avoid photography and long halts.
  • Public transport is rare—book a sturdy SUV for comfort and safety on uneven mountain roads.

It is celebrated fro about three days, starting from the 15th day of the first month of Tibetan Calender, by several pilgrims from Sikkim and neighbouring states. During this mela, the pilgrims offer ceremonies and light lamps at the Khecheolpuri Lake. This falls between the month of February and March.
