What's Inside This Guide

Six days is enough for four stops: Srinagar’s lake and gardens, Gulmarg’s meadows and gondola, Pahalgam’s river valley, and a slow last day. Add Sonamarg or Doodhpathri if you have spare time. Stay on a houseboat at least once and keep your schedule loose.

Each season changes what you will do together.

Stay on a houseboat with a private deck. Ride a shikara at sunrise or sunset, walk the terraces at Nishat and Shalimar, and finish with kahwa in the old city.

  • Shikara ride. Go at sunrise for mist and quiet, or at sunset for colour. Book a private boat.
  • Floating vegetable market. Early morning on Dal Lake. Go before 6 am for the real market.
  • Mughal gardens. Walk Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi in the morning light.
  • Shankaracharya Temple hill. A short climb for a wide view over the lake and city.
  • Old city shopping. Papier-mâché, pashmina and walnut wood, plus kahwa stops.

The two-stage gondola gives the trip’s widest views. Go in the morning for clear skies. In winter it is a snow resort; in summer, wildflowers.

  • Gondola to Apharwat. Ride both stages in the morning for the clearest views.
  • Snow play and skiing. In winter, take a beginner lesson or just play in the snow together.
  • Meadow walk. In spring and summer, stroll through wildflowers and pine edges.
  • Pony or horse ride. A gentle ride to Khilanmarg or around the meadow.
  • Golf course walk. One of the highest courses in the world makes a pretty stroll.

Pine forests, a loud clear river and nowhere to be. Hire a pony or a taxi for Aru Valley and spend the rest of the day by the water.

  • Aru Valley. Drive or ride out for meadows, a stream and mountain views.
  • Betaab Valley. A scenic valley near Pahalgam, good for photos and a picnic.
  • Chandanwari. A short drive to snow bridges and the Amarnath trail start (seasonal).
  • Lidder River. Walk the banks, picnic, or try summer rafting with a licensed operator.
  • Trout fishing. Possible with a permit; ask your hotel to arrange it.

A wide valley with a glacier at the end. Start early; the drive from Srinagar is long and the road depends on the weather.

  • Thajiwas Glacier. Walk or hire a pony to the glacier base in the warmer months.
  • Sindh River bank. Sit by the water with tea and a packed lunch.
  • Snow sledding. In winter, a sledge ride on the snow slopes.
  • Photography stops. Roadside views along the valley, best in morning light.

A calm alternative to busier meadows. Pack a picnic and expect few crowds, especially on weekdays.

  • Meadow picnic. Pack lunch and spend an unhurried afternoon on open grass.
  • Shaliganga stream. Dip your feet in the cold stream and walk along the bank.
  • Pony ride. A short ride across the meadow for tired legs.
  • Forest walk. Easy trails through pine and fir with few other visitors.
