Sonamarg Travel Guide

Situated at an altitude of 2740 meters above the sea level, Sonamarg falls before the Zoji La Pass leading to Ladakh. It is last stop from Srinagar to Ladakh. Given that Sonamarg has a lot of mountains and valleys.It is the best place for trekking and hiking activities.

Sonamarg means Meadow of Gold and has derived this name in reference to the flower covered land that appears golden in colour during spring. Also, the sunlight falling on the mountain peaks shines like golden colour. Sonmarg has a historical significance being the gateway to an ancient Silk Road connecting Kashmir to China and other Gulf Countries.

If looking for waterfalls, summer is the season of choice when the snow melts and increases the water content of all rivers. In general, March to October is the season for tourists where the true colour of Sonamarg “Meadow of Gold” is in full bloom. All flowers in different hues bloom one after other and this valley keeps changing the contrasting colours.

Note: Sonamarg is inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, NH 1D is closed in December every year and the local traffic is permitted only up to Gagangear village, which is the last permanent settlement of this area. With prior travel arrangements, however, you can still enjoy Sonamarg.
